Jerome Littlefield (Jerry Lewis) is an orderly at Whitestone Sanitarium, with a dream to help people by becoming a doctor. His only problem is that he experiences sympathy pains from the patients he comes in contact with. These sympathy pains, along with his own over-eager bumbling, trigger chaos and comical mishaps whenever he tries to lend a hand.
