If you want to see something unusual, check out this movie. I was lucky and went to see this in Nacogdoches, TX which is the home to Joe Lansdale (wrote the short novel on which the movie was based). Got to meet him, Don Coscarelli and Bruce Campbell.

If you're a purist or a film snob, you'll want to stay far away from this one. Bubba Ho-Tep defies categorization, but I'll tell you this: if you have an adventurous spirit and like to laugh, this quirky flick will definitely float your boat. The plot centers around a soul-sucking mummy who victimizes the residents of a nursing home until his efforts are stymied by a still-alive, elderly Elvis and an also still-breathing JFK, who is now an aged black man (don't ask).

Hidden in the trappings of this B horror movie is a touching meditation on the frustration and helplessness of aging. The writer/director also sneaks in a few satirical statements about our youth and celebrity-obsessed culture for good measure.

The Elvis and JFK characters are onscreen for virtually the entire film, so their casting was critical to its success. This is where the producers scored a coup. Bruce Greenwood as Elvis and Ossie Davis as JFK is as inspired as casting gets. And these two deliver stunning performances that must be seen to be believed. So, what are you waiting for? Turn off the computer and get to a video store and (as the King would say) T.C.B., baby!

This is a wonderful movie, although hard to categorize. Part horror, part comedy, part tragedy, part social commentary. It's a story about two elderly men who fight to save the world while most people dismiss them as useless, and about being a hero in a world where that heroism will never be recognized or acknowledged. But the movie is also just great fun as an eccentric comedy-horror - an unbelievable story told in a believable and oddly touching way.
