I am not a big summer movie fan. As I find the plots usually thin, the characters two dimensional, and the over the top abundance of impossible situations insulting.
Is The Fan guilty of these flaws?
The plot is thin, absolutely. The plot synopsis listed here at filmspot completely explains the entire movie. In fact, if put into novel form, this synopsis would suffice, just slap and ISBN on the back and you've a complete novel of The Fan. The only intriguing aspect of the plot was the interplay between Gil, his son, and his estranged wife. Imagine if instead of following the silly career of the baseball player, we had spent more time with the three of them? That could have been an interesting movie.
The characters are paper thin as well, all but Bobby's character, whom actually seems to have a well of depth to him, unfortunately, the story is so badly written that we never get a chance to really understand this depth. All of the other characters are so stereo-typed it lacks any creativity: the hard-nosed female reporter, the slimy agent, the crazy fan, the macho self absorbed teammate, and the list goes on.
And the over the top impossible situations? This movie is more a thriller than an action movie, so it doesn't suffer to much from crazy plot possibilities. But there are a couple of moments as in when Gil gets on the baseball field with a million cops looking for him. But that said, this movie tends to hold a general sense of reality, it holds it lazily though, with two fingers over the abyss, but it does hold it.
Tony Scott is a great director with an eye for light and color, but this movie is so terribly written he's trying to make rainbows from mud.
