I got lucky this past weekend. I had a bout of insomnia and couldn't sleep. I didn't want to watch things that I'd taped, so I scrolled around until I found movies to watch. This was one of them. I was totally mesmerized. I totally understand how and why Roberto Benigni won an Oscar for this role. I have been a Holocaust buff for many many years. I am one of those who believes that we should never forget history, lest we repeat her mistakes. Having read tons of books, seen tons of movies, on the subject, and so on, I have to say that this is one of the most creative and entertaining treatments that I've ever come across. This movie has a warmth about it that does not subtract from the sadness and horror of the Holocaust although it makes one smile an root for it's hero. It's definitely a movie that I will watch again and again and may even buy. I highly recommend this film.

Life is Beautiful tells a story about one of the ugliest and most depraved moments in the history of mankind. But oddly it does it through the lens of not only a love story, but through the eyes of 'beauty' by way of a very simple vehicle: comedy. Roberto Benigni turns this tragic tale into something to honor and love. It is beautiful, not only in name, but in action.
