An immensely popular film noir, I still have some difficulties swallowing some of the scenarios here, especially as they seem tailor-made to build up the soap opera and they aren't that necessary.

An immensely popular film noir, I still have some difficulties swallowing some of the scenarios here, especially as they seem tailor-made to build up the soap opera and they aren't that necessary.

The good in this film is in the score and cinematography, nice contrasts of light and dark, and even the clever use of mirrors to suggest illusive appearances. Eve Arden makes you want more of her character.

What bothers me is the glossiness, the soap for soap's sake aspects, Mildred's easy glide into the cafe business at one of the most beautiful properties possibly to ever go into back taxes. Her second husband is more prop than person, unbelievably not knowing of Mildred's youngest daughter dying while he is wooing Mildred. Veda herself is no particular mystery, being as self-centered from beginning to end. Joan Crawford herself is aloof for much of the action, never establishing a baseline - and is at an awkward age for centering the role of Pierce.

So aside from the mystery of the plot itself, I've always found this one a little over-rated.
