Yussel Rabinovitch played by Neil Diamond is the son of a Jewish Cantor, Cantor Rabinovitch played by Laurence Olivier. He is married to Rivka Rabinovitch played by Catlin Adams. Life is going as normal as tradition requires. Yussel is friends with a group of black men of whom his father would not approve. They have a singing group that plays in small dives around town. Yussel used to go to watch them. One day one of the singing group got thrown in jail and they were short one man for their group of four. Since Yussel had been to all the gigs he new the music. They asked him to join them but since they were playing at an all black club and they were an all black group there was a problem. So they put face paint and a wig on Yussel to pass him off as black. That didn't work but it did get the group and him recognised by the music industry. Yussel was offered to go to California to try out his music for a rock singer. This was going to go against everything that was traditional in his life with his father and his wife. While in California Yussel meets a woman, Molly Bell, played by Lucie Arnaz who shows him the ropes, shows him what to do when he gets knocked through those ropes but to never give up. As time passes Yussel become a household name. He is spending more and more time with Molly who understands his life style as opposed to Rivka. The difference in life style change leads Rivka and Yussel to divorce. Yussel falls in love with Molly. His father doesn't accept this however. Yussel has some decisions to make.
