It was AWESOME. The action is great, its funny, and Nicolas Cage is in it to boot. (He's my favorite actor.) This movie deserves an award. It really does. God Bless Jerry Bruckheimer.

Thank God for the action and Riley. Without those two elements, this movie is nothing. Absolutely Nothing. A lot better than the second one though.

Good film, and better than I expected. Very good performances by Sean Bean and Justin Bartha... I'm not sure if nicholas Cage was the best choice for this film but he delivered an interesting performance.

At first glance, National Treasure appears mildly interesting but doesn't seem to have much to draw people in. The presence of Nicolas Cage and Jerry Bruckheimer however, will most likely be the biggest draw to some, as both of these gentleman have proven themselves over and over.
The premise of this movie is that there was once a great treasure, supposedly too great for a single man to possess. Thus, a secret society was formed to protect it and keep it secret. Over the years, the members of this group and their families lost credibility and respect due to their claims that their ancestors left a map to the location of this treasure on the back of the Declaration of Independance. Nicolas Cage, as the star, is the one who, as a child, dreamed of finding this treasure. As a man who is very knowledgable about and has great respect for history however, he calls off the search once he learns that he must steal the Declaration to get to it. His financial backer won't give up so easily and the race begins, the two parties trying to steal the Declaration and follow the clues to discover the location of the lost treasure.
Initially the group starts out in Antarctica searching for a lost ship (boat, not plane) buried in the ice. The opening scene where the first clues are deciphered and the team breaks up is possibly the lamest point in the whole flick, as giant leaps are made and Cage's childhood dream is established. While vague sleuthing is retained throughout the film, it's not quite as unbelievable as the first scene, and in typical Jerry Bruckheimer fashion, the action does get better. The actual stealing of the D of I is nice because it builds tension on the two groups coming up with their own unique ways of doing it. Once the authorities get involved it makes things more complicated.
The main villian also plays his part pretty well. You may recognize him from GoldenEye (James Bond flick) and Fellowship of the Ring. I didn't expect this movie to get good reviews at all, as there is not much in it that critics typically deem positive. Apparently it did very well, though. It was far from the best movie I've seen; not even my favorite Bruckheimer venture, but still worth at least a rental or a matinee. It could've been a lot worse, but I feel that Cage and Bruckheimer bring it up considerably.

Nicholas Cage is not my idea of a great actor. He's mostly the same in every movie, only in "Raising Arizona" that made him a slacker with no direction in life and here it makes him a misunderstood archaeologist who just might be a genius.

If you take a look at who was involved in the making of this film and even the list of actors--which includes the likes of John Voight and Sean Bean--you'd think it's going to be some serious action movie with riveting performances. Instead, what you get is the sort of picture that's two fun hours of conspiracy theory and adventure scenes that leave you feeling like you just saw a good movie much like any other 50 other movies in the genre.

The story centers around Cage's character, who against his father's wishes is hunting for family treasure he believes was passed down through his line by the Templars/Freemasons. He's partnered up with Bean's character as the financier, and with some generic computer nerd guy who reminded me of Patton Oswalt. Before long, Cage and Oswa--whoever--are running from Bean, then racing him to find whether or not there's any truth to Cage's idea that something special is on the back of the US Constitution. That of course means a daring heist and a love interest and all of the stuff that makes for a great summer blockbuster. In the end, the movie itself is one of the finer blockbusters I've seen in awhile thanks to smooth directing and witty dialogue and all of the other stuff you already know to expect if you've seen 10 blockbusters in your life.

It's formulaic and at times stupid and predictable, but it works and makes for a reasonably enjoyable two hours. My wife, whose pick it was, is looking forward to the sequel. I'll probably watch it along with her and not grumble a whole lot.

Pro: The story is interesting.

Bad: Overacting.

Average score 3 1/2 maybe is Xmas season.
