This movie changed my outlook about the topic of rape. I never really thought much about the topic before since I'm a guy and don't plan on raping anyone so I didn't see a point in caring too much. Looking back I wish I did care more before. I knew that rape victims go through a lot but this movie showed that more in depth.
The story in short is a girl goes to a summer party before starting high school, ends up getting raped at the party and calls the police on the party and everyone hates her for it since there unaware of the rape. She then battles with internal/psychological and social conflicts, and trys to get her life somewhat back on track. I have not read the book the movie is based on so I can't say anything about changes from the book to the movie.
The first time I watched it, I came in with a bit of a prejudge mental mindset till about around the end when I started to open my mind to it. I have watched it about three times now (?) and every time I find something about I didn't notice before. I think what makes the movie so good is it shows a good balance of the main character who was raped battling with the internal/psychological issues and what not but at the same time trying to keep her social life kind-of alive, and seemly still a fairly "normal" kid at times. For a while the just plain rawness of the film freaked me out. That plus it was filmed in the same county I live in, and some of the places seem vaguely familiar which I find to be creepy. The acting was good, it shocks me how well Kristen Stewart acted being only 13 at the time of filming. Some people may notice Steve Zahn who I knew from 'Saving Silverman'.
