This coming of age film is quite touching. A well written and directed piece by David Duchovny, and well played by the actors involved.
The basic story is very straight forward: A boy coming of age is forced to make some very serious choices about his life and how he deals with them. There are no surprises here. No twists. No confused verb. This work is more poetic than that, in that it is looking at the meaning of friendship and the value of how far one would go to protect the heart of another. All the characters are sacrificial in this film, struggling to find some balance that can validate their lives. But it's hard road and pain killers may be required.
The acting is very good. Robin Williams is amazing, if I knew him personally I would have called him up and told him so.
Tea Leoni, married to David Duchovny, cast has his mother...hum...something Oedipus there? I don't know, but the thought did occur to me the minute I saw her. Once she started acting though all of that went away. She's probably my favorite character, as she seems the most confused, but so willing to try. This character isn't in it enough, but then again, it's not about her.
Erykah Badu as the jailbird: great casting. Her voice is like the song of life. I shed a tear when she sung.
Overall this was a very good movie. Solid performances. I was pleasantly surprised by the poetry of it. Not so simple but not so deep either. Nice work.
The only down side was that Williams character 'got smart' at the end, that is too say, his character changed.
