Set in the Pacific Northwest way before the invasion of the white man and when the earth was emerging from the Ice Age, it tells the story of Kenai, a boy who lives with his two older brothers Denahi and Sitka. When Sitka is killed by a bear, Kenai sets out to avenge his oldest brother's death. He does defeat it and come across a light. When he poke it, the Great Spirits pop out (in the form of the Northern Lights and animal spirits) and an eagle spirit (Sitka) turns Kenai into a bear. The only way he could redeem himself and turn back into a human is to head to the mountain where the Northern Lights touch the earth. On his way there he befriends a bear cub named Koda who was separated from his mom. Together on their journey, Kenai learns about the true meaning of brotherhood as they encounter 2 Moose who aren't bright, Bighorn Sheep rams, Mammoth herds, Koda's bear pals at the salmon run, and others. Meanwhile, Denahi stalks Koda and Kenai, determined to kill Kenai, because he thinks that he killed Kenai (he thinks the bear killed Kenai).
