A story of curruption and the winding tendrils of the syndicate in a non-descript midwestern city, "The Racket" starts out with a fairly complicated storyline that pits organized crime, a never-seen crime head, a local judge on the take, and the honest police against each other.

The pace of the movie is so leisurely that a lot of the excitement is completely drained away - none of the sub-stories (the newspaper reporter, the mob moll wanting to go straight, the cop who has had enough) really generate much emotion either. To top it all off, Mitchum is almost a narrator, never showing any real emotion as he goes about setting the wheels of justice right again.
