This film would be interesting only because it began life as a teleplay during the golden days of really good TV writing, but it also has an arresting performance by Ernest Borgnine.

We all know people like Marty, and most have struggled with loneliness and self-doubt at some time in their life. The writing here does a great job of putting it on screen - for every viewer to suffer and rejoice in it all. That elements of this story have so often been imitated over the years is a testimony to the primacy of the tale told in "Marty". The movie is startling in its simplicity, but the interplay of a man, his friends, and his mother has plenty of texture to it. There is a too-syrupy quality to this film that bothers me in some places, but it's hard to find one with as much emotional power.

Marty is one of my favorite movies, partly because I can identify somewhat with the title character. It was a surprise Oscar winner of Best Picture, and Best Actor for Borgnine, for 1955. The synopsis above says his mother ran his life, but I didn't see it quite that way. He loved his mother, and she him. Also, I think he was in his thirties. At any rate, it's a great movie, especially if you're in the mood for an old B&W movie without much excitement, but a great story nonetheless.
