Made at the same time as MGM's "Brigadoon", "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" has fewer obvious movie stars but an arguably more interesting storyline and challenging staging. There are sly references to the "Sabine Women" throughout the film and the story is about as much fun as a viewer can have on a soundstage made to represent the woods.

Of course, it's the powerful dance numbers that distinguish the film - some truly novel choreography links the music to the setting in a way that is a little hard to believe on not seeing the movie. Howard Keel turns in good vocals and the Mercer lyrics have a nice playful quality.

A true classic with the barn dance as the outstanding highpoint of the movie. Too bad they don't make 'em like this anymore.

A classic! This movie is so wonderful. The singing is top notch, and the barn dance is one-of-a-kind - it definitely shows that dancing is not for sissies. It features the amazing singing talent of Keel and Powell, as well as the dancing prowess of Russ Tamblyn, as well as several well-known male dancers from the stage. It is a little sexist, but not in any way that is truly offensive. I'm always surprised that more people don't know about it. It was #21 on AFI's best musical list!
