Adam Pontipee rides into town in order to get chewing tobacco, molasses, a new plow - and a wife. When he sees Milly, he realizes that she is the perfect woman ("pretty and trim and not too slim, heavenly eyes and just the right size, simple and sweet and sassy as can be"). Milly, a single woman working in a restaurant, agrees, despite the objections of her friends. When they reach Adam's home in the mountains, he reveals why he decided to marry: he has six brothers! Though Milly is angry at first, she decides to stay and teach Adam and his brothers some manners. When they all go to a barn raising, the six brothers each fall in love with a different town girl. However, their antics at the barn raising effectively blackball them from town society. Inspired by Milly's copy of Plutarch, Adam and the brothers ride into town to kidnap the girls (and a preacher) and marry them, thinking that the girls will be grateful. After they get the girls (but forget the preacher), they are all snowed in for the winter. Milly banishes the boys to sleep in the barn, while her sharp words drive Adam to the distant hunting cabin. During the winter, the girls gradually begin to return the boys' feelings while Milly discovers she's pregnant. When spring comes, Milly gives birth to a baby girl, while the girls' families "attack" the farm, intending to rescue the girls. When the girls make it clear that they now love the boys, they are all married in the Pontipee house.
