I think the story-telling is what does it the most maybe. It moves really slowly, you've seen every scene bit by bit from other movies (but told worse), and when it gets to the end you just think 'duh.' It was supposed to be this huge twist and it ended up being so anticlimactic for me I was almost left the room.

Halle Berry stars as a doctor of an institution who one night, after almost crashing her car at the sight of a girl in the middle of the road, wakes to find that she's now a patient in the institution, but not only that, but she also murdered her husband. Gothika is one of those horror movies that isn't about how many people get killed (slashers) or how they get killed (The Ring) but really serves as a horror mystery. Miranda Grey (Berry) must find out how she got into the institution and who this ghost is that seems to be terrorizing her, or guiding her towards. The acting on the whole is pretty good, but what keeps Gothika from scoring higher is the fact that as a horror movie, it doesn't always provide good scares or shocks, especially for a ghost movie.

So overall, Gothika is a pretty decent movie, but for you horror fans, you're not going to find much to jump to. For everyone else, Gothika is a good rental.
