Catherine is eight years old and lives on a farm in Yorkshire. Her brother Matthew has leukaemia. One day at school she is cross when a new girl Uma is given her brothers coat peg in the school cloakroom, as a result she lets go of Uma and lets her fall on the floor when playing a game about trust. Catherine's father makes her go and apologise to Uma and eventually the two girls become friends. One day they are out together on the moors when they experience a mysterious light. Catherine a Catholic is convinced that it's the Virgin Mary and that it means her brother will get well again. Uma , a Hindu believes that it is a goddess telling her that something bad is going to happen. Will one of the girls be right or should faith simply be based on believing and not seeing?
