This is a remake of a british movie with the same name from 1955. Those of you who've seen the original know that the plot involves a band of miscreant, slightly dysfunctional, and always quirky band of theives using the root cellar of an unsuspecting sweet old lady to host a robbery. When she discovers what has been going on in her quarters, the crooks conclude that she must be eliminated. This proves to be a task beyond any of them, however, as none of them are able to pull it off.
Unlike the English suburbs of the original, this film brings us to the southern bible belt. It takes certain liberties with both the setting and characters, such as making Mrs. Marva Munson an old church lady with no tolerance for smoking or "hippity-hop music." And the goal this time is the Bandit Queen gambling cruise boat, docked just down the hill from Mrs. Munsun's house.
At first glance the premise stirs mild interest. It is only after you look at the cast and the characters they create that you start to wonder what lies beyond the surface. Tom Hanks, in what might arguably be one of his most unusual roles yet, plays the eccentric G.H. Dorr, Ph.D. As the mastermind behind their caper, he appeases the old lady by convincing her that the group is there to practice gentle renissance music. Marlon Wyans plays the young, edgy, inside man. He is a janitor in the casino boat that is the focus of their efforts. Each of the other actors brings something different to their roles, making them their own.
It is in these same cast and characters that the charm of this movie is found. Each one of them is very unique and lovable in their own way, playing their respective roles in slightly over-the-top caricatures. Despite this, Tom Hanks' role is largely responsible for carrying the movie along, although the somewhat small scale of the show makes it seem like an odd choice for him to take. Maybe he saw some potential in what he could bring to the role? I will admit I probably would not have seen it if I hadn't known he was in the cast. With an air of intellectual superiority, conveyed in both his actions and words, his character is the perfect example of the genius but executionally challenged villian we've all seen, just done in a different way. No doubt he hit the role home in a way no one else could have.
The soundtrack is also interesting. It is an eclectic mix of southern gospel and hip-hop. Now that might not sound like a good pairing, but they are used to emphasize different situations, whether they be Wyans' off the handle antics or merely the southern setting around them. It works quite nicely.
I was quite disappointed to find that this movie got very ho-hum reviews. Apparently the directors of this movie, Joel and Ethan Coen, have done much better films. Not being too familiar with their work may help to come into this show with an open mind. It's very clear that it doesn't take itself too seriously. I urge anybody who even remotely enjoys Tom Hanks or comedies to at least give Ladykillers a glance. If you are able to see the charm and shine under the surface, you will thouroughly enjoy it.

This movie is funnier of what you could think. Tom Hanks' character never stop talking and talking and I think that everything was awesome in this movie. I think that J.K. Simmons was also really cool and so was Marlon Wayans, this movie was great!

I was surprised!

I wasn't expecting what I've seen. I was expecting a boring movie and I had not a lot of expectation concerning the quality of the writing, but I was wrong. Its a mature and funny comedy. You should rent it.
