It's interesting to note that the Crystal Skull made an appearance in all four Indiana Jones books by Max McCoy. In the last book by McCoy:
Also, the latest Nancy Drew game has the Crystal Skull in it, taking place in New Orleans, where Indiana himself went to in one of the McCoy's books.
I suppose the name isn't trademarked.

In the movie "The Phantom" there where three skulls, one of gold, one of jade and one of crystal, if I'm not mistaken.
There actually are crystal skulls in real life. There are suppose to be 13 hidden all over the world and will reveal great knowledge and power when brought together. 3 or 4 have already been found, and their creation defies modern science, as they have show no tool markings. They shouldn't exist.
I wonder how much of all that will play into the movie.

The movie did a good job of giving it's two cents on what the Crystal Skulls are about, just like it did with the Ark and the Holy Grail.
It didn't break new ground with any theories, it pretty much agreed of what the believers of the Skulls think, but it's fine.
