The true story of New Zealand racehorse, Phar Lap. Australian racehorse trainer, Harry Telford, purchases a horse on behalf of American businessman and friend, Dave Davis. When the ungainly, wart-faced colt arrives in Sydney, Davis is angry and fellow trainers scoff at Telford's insistance that the horse will become a champion based solely on his bloodlines. In a short time, Phar Lap (the Tai word for "lightning") fills out and learns how to win. Soon he is winning every race in sight, angering both the book makers and the Victory Racing Club. When the committee forces Phar Lap to run under inhumane conditions, Davis decides to take "The Red Terror" to America for bigger and more profitable races. However, tragedy strikes soon after.
