In early 1970's Salford, a traditional Pakistani father, George Khan (Om Puri), who is married to Lancashire-born woman named Ella (Linda Bassett), expects his family to follow his strict Pakistani Muslim tradition. Having been born and brought up in England, his seven children have learned to adapt themselves to the British culture and started to reject to their father's rules on Pakistani tradition. When his eldest son, Nazir (Ian Aspinall), runs away from home after almost keeping his fate to an arranged marriage, George secretly arranges marriage to his other two sons. Tariq and Abdul soon learn about their father's plan and start to rebel, forcing Ella to stand up for herself and make a choice between her respect for her husband and the right of her children to make their own decisions.
