Brassed Off is a classic British romantic feel-good movie with a strong social subplot. Based in the fictional South Yorkshire mining town of Grimley, it follows the plight of the members of the Grimley Colliery Brass Band as they fight to save their mine and the community at its centre. Pete Postlethwaite stars as band leader Danny, a retired miner struggling to keep his band together through pit closure, disillusionment and his own collapse from pneumoconiosis - the price paid for nearly half a decade down the mines. His son Phil (Stephen Tompkinson) is a family man, up to his neck in debt, whose financial predicament leaves him with divided loyalties where the future of the pit is concerned. Andy (Ewan McGregor) is passionate about saving the mine, but when his childhood sweetheart Gloria (Tara Fitzgerald) reappears in town, he finds that all isn't quite as straight forward as it seems.
