Propelled-along by its jaunty Elmer Bernstein score, this is one of those heroic male-bonding (from McQueen to Coburn, they're all here) movies that could only have been made in the 1960s. It also begs the viewer to look into the real story as everything seems way over-the-top, including the idea that the Germans would be so concerned with escaped POWs as to construct a special camp for the most incorrigable.

The film is filled with interesting bits of planning and logistics and good action sequences to move the pace. I have to admit that the details of the escape - the blackmail, pick-pocketing, tunneling, forging, and making uniforms is by far the most interesting aspect of the story for me. Especially effective are the details that highlight the individual weaknesses of the men.

I really enjoy watching this movie. It's a true story of the american and british soilders who's being held prisoners during WW2. You can just easily cheer for these men trying to ecsape for freedom. Will they make it out alive without being caught by the Nazi You'll just have to watch. It had a great cast and alot of good action. I give it 5 stars.

the king of classics. great way to kill sometime, and easily one of the best movies of all time.
