You know a movie is good if it constantly keeps you entertained and riveted, with a great story, dialogue, characters and pace. Especially if that movie is 67 years old. Except for the corny musical score, this film has barely aged, and I just saw it for the first time today. Joel McCrea is great as John Sullivan, a pretentious Hollywood director of lightweight comedies who believes that a serious social statement film is what the world needs. He goes undercover as a hobo, where he meets a struggling wanna be actress (the excellent and may I say sexy Veronica Lake), who calls him out for a phony. However, when he experiences the real nitty gritty of the hobo's life, he realizes that maybe comedies are important after all. Truly fantastic film.
