Perhaps the finest film depicting warfare and its effect on the loss of humanity in the individuals most involved in it. The story may concern WWI, still Kubrick conveys the desolation inherent of all wars, as three men are randomly chosen to represent the futility around them. Kirk Douglas is astounding, yet his is not the only great performance. Everyone is perfectly casted, giving a credibility to each compelling scene. This work of art gives evidence that there is a strong argument that B&W cinematography eclipses color in such intense movies. There are so many overpowering visions from the ultra-realism of the battle sequences to the last introspective moments one feels drained by the time the film ends.
