Leaving America after the death of his brother John, Lawrence Stewart Talbot returns home to learn to take over the family estate from his father, Sir John, and learns of Gwen Conliffe, the daughter of the owner of an antique store nearby, when he tests out his father's telescope after repairing it. Talbot goes with Jenny to see the gypsies who have arrived in town to get their fortune told with Gwen's friend Jenny, but after he learns Gwen is engaged to be married, the full moon turns one of the gypsies, Bela, into a werewolf. The werewolf has already murdered Jenny when Talbot arrives to fight it off of her, but he is bitten by the werewolf before delivering the killing blow with his new silver-topped cane, and the wounded Talbot is taken home by Jenny and the gypsy Maleva, Bela's mother. Inheriting the curse of the werewolf through Bela's bite, Talbot now grows fur and prowls the streets at night as the Wolf Man, for even a man who is pure at heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms, and the autumn moon is bright...
