The movie of James Hilton's novel about a romance which is interrupted by amnesia. Charles Rainier/Smithy (Colman) is an amnesiac after the events of World War 1, and is saved from a mental asylum by Paula (Greer Garson). After a brief marriage with Paula, Smithy's memory of his pre-World War 1 life returns, but he has no memory of the life which he shared with wife Paula despite her attempts to rekindle the relationship he can't recall.
