The Night of the Hunter is a really good thriller that has, sadly, become extremely underrated. It was decades ahead of its time and challenged preconceived notions in the genre. For example, while kids are usually safe in thrillers, this film makes you second-guess it. This film also gives Robert Mitchum the role of a career. He plays a murderous preacher quite convincingly. The atmosphere in this film is great. You truly start to feel stalked and followed by Mitchum's character at every turn.

A more apt description of "Night of the Hunter" would be a dream that turns into a fairy tale that turns into a nightmare that turns into a dream and maybe a fairy tale again. A very dreamlike film over all. This most watchable cult classic remains so for its sheer unpredictability in so many realms- the chiaroscuro cinematography, its all new iconographic imagery, the bravuro, deliberately mannered performances by Robert Mitchum and Shelley Winters and a host of things you'll notice anew with each fresh viewing. This is Mitchum's most memorable role ever, and far relentlessly scarier than "Cape Fear." The demise of one principle will give you bad dreams, and the terror the children face is overwhelmingly awful. There is so much going on despite its leisurely pace which allows the kids to watch kindly animals along the riverside as they make one escape. There's murder, old-timey Americana wholesomeness, spiritualism alongside religious hypocrisy, and no one with the exception of the kids is what they first appear to be. This is truly a "to own" dvd.

More's the pity that this remains actor Charles Laughton's only directed film-"Night of the Hunter" is that incontestibly brilliant.
