On St Valentine's Day, 1900, in a rural part of Victoria, Australia, an excursion from Appleyard College (a boarding school for young ladies) to a steep hill called Hanging Rock ends mysteriously in disaster when three of the girls (Miranda, Marion, and Irma) and one of their teachers, Miss McCraw, vanish without trace. The movie follows the missing girls and those who returned, lovingly rebuilding a lost corner of late Victorian Australia and asking more questions than it answers. Wrongly thought to be based on a true story, Picnic at Hanging Rock was really pure fiction and was developed from a novel of the same name by Joan Lindsay, published in 1967.
