I first bought this film knowing nothing about it, it was in bargin bin during a Christmas Sale and I needed something good to watch. I have never picked up a DVD at random and loved it so well.
Firstly, Romola Garai is fast becoming one of my favourite actresses, after her brilliant performance in Mary Bryant last year I hardly recognised her in this film as a shy, awkward but highly intelligent girl named Cassandra coming of age in difficult times for her family. I adore how this film shows all sides of unrequited love, the giving, the receiving - uncertain love, angry love. It's like the film explores all different kinds of love and gently makes the point that you have to be satisfied with yourself before you can really fall head over heels.
I find that I pull this film out when I am feeling particularly lowly, because although it's sad and things don't really work out the way Cassandra hopes, the is the strength of will to go on, no matter what. It always makes me cry at the end, and I don't cry often during films.
