It is 1987, on a Friday night, in a small town. Two 29 year old single ladies who have been best friends since high school are headed out for the night. Beth (Juliette Lewis) and Debbie (Uma Thurman) are looking for love in all the wrong places. Beth is a single mother of a 10 year old daughter, who is still wondering 'What if?' about her life. Debbie, on the other hand, has no strings attached...yet desperately wants some, and launches blindly into every affair she stumbles across. Then there is Virginia (Gena Rowlands), Deb's mother, a widower who finds love for the second time in her life.
