This is certainly the finest film version of Raymond Chandler's classic hard-boiled novel. An intriguing plot and fine acting are, however, unable to disguise the (strange) discrepancies between the film version and the novel. Bogart is excellent as ever, and there is real chemistry between him and Bacall. Dialogue is witty and fast-paced. A good film in it's own right, but the novel is the place to go for authentic Chandler.
