It is probably instructive to remember that 1934 was not long after the end of silent movies and many of the films made were attempts at defining the new medium. "It Happened One Night" is a sterling example of what became known as the romantic comedy and it deserves its accolades.

The dialog is brisk and funny, it even helps Colbert (who I find a little bit dry here) and it puts Gable at his best, funny yet reserved and commanding. Some of the plot devices might seem old and shopworn, but again, they were done here first. Adult and sophisticated, a viewer should compare this to many of the other movies of the time (often maudlin morality tales) - even though the genre would continue to develop over the next ten years.

I also like the period details, the art deco stenciling on Gable's editor's door, the "motor camps" that were examples of the early motels, the singing on the bus, and what is often striking - an optimistic view of the world during the heights of the Great Depression.

This movie one Best Picture at the Oscars i can see why a great movie that has a good story my rating of this movie is 4 1/2 stars.
