The story of Muriel (Toni Collette), a young woman who has low self-esteem and a opressive family (except for her mother). She tricks her parents into giving her a blank check and uses the money to go on an exoctic holiday where she meets an intriuging girl, who she has met in the past (Rachael Griffith). Muriel's life changes rapidly but she still believes the only way for her to have happiness is to get married. She get's her wish, but while she's been following her dream what has it cost those around her?
