Clint Eastwood shows a nice bit of restraint in this simple story of an Italian woman who lives more intensely during four days than she ever will again.

The screenplay highlights Streep and she turns in one of her best performances - low key but very thoughtful in her delivery. Clint Eastwood himself wisely dials his own scenes back. The movie suffers from all those aspects of modern filmmaking, especially in extremely long and slow visual set-ups and interludes. But it is effective as this is a personal story. The time is well-used to set up something that should ring a bell with all those who dream of something special in the short life lived by human beings. There are many movies that use a lifetime of incidences to tell a story, this one is one of the better ones to focus on a key crossroads in life.
