Safe Men features two of the industry's finest comedic actors not straying too far from their normal vein, and that's a good thing. Sam Rockwell and Steve Zahn are perfect in their roles, and their interplay is what makes this film work so well. Punchlines aren't quite as funny as the players' reactions and deliveries, and this is what makes the movie such an understated gem. Director John Hamburg is best known for his work on Meet the Parents, a film that is basically the antithesis of Safe Men. Where Safe Men requires some subtlety and witty dialogue, Meet the Parents and its demon spawn Meet the Fockers put it all on the table for a brainless audience. Paul Giamatti bests his Sideways role as Veal Chop, Michael Lerner is hilarious and at times chilling as Jewish mob boss Big Fat Bernie Gale, and Josh Pais and a moustachioed Mark Ruffalo have their own awesome chemistry as the rival safe crackers. All the acting performances are bundled together exquisitely by Hamburg with an awesome campy soundtrack, particularly the scene where Zahn and Rockwell are recruited by Giamatti. "Who heard the second cliiiiiick..." "I heard the second cliiiiiiick..." Good stuff.
