It's a tough thing to approach a film with the intent to review it, when it is constantly at the top of many critics top 10 lists. In fact, of most top 10 lists of anything in general. Despite the worry I had before watching the film, mainly about it not living up to my expectations, I was happy to learn that every critic with Citizen Kane in their top 10 lists is a genius. Because, Citizen Kane is one of the best films I've ever seen.

The film tells the story of Charles Foster Kane, a man who started out in the world of publishing, before gradually evolving into a ruthless man, hungry for power. The film is told through flashbacks, and the events are revealed through the research of a newspaper reporter seeking to solve the mystery of Kane's dying word: "Rosebud".

Citizen Kane is a ruthlessly poignant film, which stuns and dazzles throughout. While it is extremely heavy going, it is also a fantastic example of filmmaking at it's finest. The darkness of the characters, the complexity of the events, and the acting itself are all extremely ahead of their time - especially for a film made in 1941.

The characters in general, are fairly dark in their portrayal, with only the character of Mr. Bernstein being the only purely good person, while the character of Kane, himself, is built up and up as a harsh, evil, unlikeable man, whom the audience should have little sympathy for.

However, it is in the film's final moments that Kane is redeemed. With Jerry Thompson, the reporter searching for the meaning of "Rosebud", concluding that he will never find the answer, he notices a sled that Kane rode on when he was a poor child, free from his tyranical nature and heartlessness. It reminds us that there was a time before Kane had money, when he was a normal boy with hardly anything due to his parents' poor financial situation.

The film goes out with a glimmer of hope, and redemption for Kane, and we are left to ponder what really lies within the hearts of evil men, and also given the opportunity to consider that, perhaps, they were good men once.

Overall, one of the best film's ever made. Nothing short of a masterpiece.

One of the best films of all time, Citizen Kane is the movie that would be right next to the word "movie" in a Thesaurus. It's the groundbreaking film that explains the life of Charles Foster Kane through different people. The reason that one man goes around finding out about the life of Kane is that he's trying to find the significance of Kane's final word, "Rosebud". By the end of the movie, the one man soon founds out that one word cannot explain the life of a man, which is one of the many reasons why this film is the very best that cinema has to offer. A truly outstanding film, this movie is a must-own for anybody who loves movies. Or anybody who loves life.
