Art house films are always hit or miss. They never seem to be middle of the road. People either get it (that is: like it) or they don't get it (and hate it). In my case I got it (at least 80% of it anyway)...so guess which I'm calling this.
Kissed is basically a story about spirituality. It is not a movie simply about necrophilia, but it has some of that in it.
The story, a love triangle of sorts, plays out between Molly Parker (Sandra), Peter Outerbridge (Matt) and the dead. This movie, with sub-themes about obsession and jealousy, holds up against the scrutiny of those looking for something else.
It is a deep movie. It is touching and sad. You don't want it to go the direction it goes, but you know that it must. It leaves you with questions, but at least tries to solve a few of the bigger ones for us. Like why she does it.
The metaphoric 'bleeding' scene is brilliant and just one of the reasons why this movie works so well.
It's dark, be warned, after all we're taking a straight hard look at sleeping with dead people, from the perspective of not insanity but love and spirituality. The acting is very good, although there were a few moments there where I felt like they were rushed for time or maybe near the end of the work day, things seemed not quite the same pace they had been through the rest of the movie.
The direction is good. It's a simple story really and since it is about people, the direction should linger a bit on the forms of men. Which it does and does well.
