This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. And I'm sorry, but I do have to disagree with elise920 for saying the story doesn't have much substance because it does. Parts of it are confusing the first like, 5 times you watch it, but after you've seen the movie about 50 times, you completely understand everything. Watching the older films makes you appreciate this one much more too. I think that Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum were born to play Christine and The Phantom. I mean, neither of them have really nailed any other roles that they've played. If you had never seen them in this movie you might even think they were bad actors. I absolutely love this movie and I can't wait to go see the show on Broadway.

Watching this movie brought me happiness and joy because this is my favorite Opera of all time. The fact that Butler and Emma all sang their parts was amazing. Great job there. I can and will never get enough of this movie. I've see it 25 times this year alone. Phantom, i'm so sorry you did not get the one you loved. You were treated terrible and I am glad that her husband will never forget who you are.

One word: gorgeous. It is a very pretty movie no doubt, and I think it does a good job adapting the musical to the big screen. Story-wise it doesn't have much substance (or make much sense), but neither does the musical. The cast is a hit-and-miss. Emmy Rossum is great as Christine, and her voice is very pleasant. Gerard Butler, on the other hand, lacks the vocal talent required for his role as The Phantom even though he oozes sex appeal (or it could be just the mask). The most boring character, however, has gotta be Patrick Wilson's Raoul, who is as lifeless as a bland love interest could be. The action sequences added in the movie are also quite pointless and redundant, and you can tell they are just there to please the male audience, who otherwise would probably have been bored with a romantic musical involving a guy in a mask.
The movie is flawed but gorgeous, sexy and entertaining. If you like the musical, the chances are you'll probably enjoy the movie too. I did.

This version of Phantom of the Opera is of course based off of the stage production by Andrew Lloyd Webber. In so many ways this movie equals the magical splendor that live performances allow.
Schumacher could have played it straight, trying to 'stick' to the stage production, focusing on the songs and to a lesser degree the chorography. But he didn't. He and his team managed to take the underlying beauty of what appears on the stage and apply the proper artist eye to it for film. With the lavish stage sets. With the magic of good special effects. And most importantly, telling the story.
Then there is the music and how wonderful and enchanting the dark melodies and spell binding lyrics. One is both left with the feelings of "Music of The Night", it's dark love, it's brooding passion, yet at the same time humming it every where you go for days. So powerfully well written is Andrew Lloyd Webber's works.
This is an excellent date movie, for all levels of the relationship.

I totally loved this movie from the first time I saw it. My dad saw it, convincing my mom convincing me. I saw like half of it at first and I did not intend on seeing the rest of the movie but it stopped and I had to see the rest... We went out and rented it like... twice then bought it, and couldn't get enough! I have the 2 disc DVD set and the soundtrack... I love the acting in this. Gerard Butler did a phenomenal job as the phantom! And Emmy Rossum did a great Christine. The story line was fantastic, but i did not like how it kept switching to the present, it was extremely confusing, but then you get it all in the end.

The first time I saw this movie, I could NOT get the song out of my head, and I find myself force to watch it again. I really like this movie alot! I think Gerard Butler did a great job as the Phantom. And Emmy Rossum was excellent as Christine Daae. I think it will some day be a classic film in about 40 or more years down the road. This film is worth watching, if you're a fan of movie with actors are singing.

The book's ending is just far more powerful. by the way, am i the only one who didn't know that there was a butt-load of phantom movies? holy crap!

Why spend a fortune for Broadway tickets when you can watch it on your television. Even though it had a few changes from the musical, best movie musical I seen in years. It shows more drama, romance, and suspense than you can ever imagine.

A great love story/tragedy. The love story is of Raoul and Christine but the tragedy is of Christine and the Phantom. It was a great movie. But I have a few things I really didn't like. I didn't like how Christine made it seem like she was powerless against the Phantom's love. By him loving her, he had some sort of control over her. The Phantom felt that since he taught her how to sing, she owed him a great debt. I digress. I mean she was in love with another he couldn't possibly think a relationship between the two would work. I'm just glad he let her go in the end. I really didn't want to see Christine and Raoul be separated. They obviously were in love. It made me cry in the end when I saw the fresh rose by Christine's grave. I guess he still loved her regardless of where her heart lied. It was also sad that Raoul was left alone and he was obviously still mourning her death. Great movie.
