A story based on the life of writer and director Eva Gardos, this film depicts the personal odyssey of a family's escape from Communist Hungary. One night, Margit (Nastassja Kinski) and Peter (Tony Goldwyn) arrange to escape Hungary, but their infant daughter, Suzanne, is mistakenly left behind. With her parents now living in America, young Suzanne is then taken care of and being raise by a loving man and woman in the most remote Eastern European countryside. At six, young Suzanne is to be reunited with the family she has never known, where she finds the adjustment difficult and does not fully understand that Margit and Peter are her real parents, but she is willing to stay, and if she feels the same way in several years, Peter is willing to send her back to Hungary. Later, as a rebellious teenager, with Margit becoming a highly overprotective mother, Suzanne (Scarlett Johansson) takes her father's offer to go back to those who raised her as a child. While in Hungary, she finds herself with the unsolved questions and unspoken secrets to unravel the mystery of her past in order to discover her true identity.
