Based on the popular Jane Austen novel of the same title, this film explores the life of three sisters and their mother once their father dies and his son from his first marriage inherits everything. He leaves them with little money and Mrs. Dashwood moves onto some of her family's land with her daughters. The eldest daughter, Elinor, becomes good friends with her half brother's wife's brother, Edward Ferrars. Meanwhile, the second youngest, Marianne, befriends and falls for a local man, John Willoughby, but has a deep admirer in Col. Christopher Brandon. All hope seems lost for both of the girls when their suitors turn out not to be intended for them. When all hope seems lost, one of the girls in her depressive state falls ill and her life is in the balance of someone she never thought much of.
