Absolutely awful. This movie had so many things wrong with it! First of all, there were so many scientific inaccuracies in this movie that I was gasping most of the time, secondly, it really wasn't scary in the least. The story had great potential that was never reached, it almost go good but didn't. I watched the movie for one reason, Jason Isaacs was in it, so I say that DJ should have been in it more!

I remember seeing this in the theater with my Father and being mad beforehand because I hated space movies. When we walked out of the theater I could not shut up about how awesome this movie was. Definitely surprised me!

Paul Anderson, not to be confused with the Paul Thomas Anderson who directed Boogie Nights and Magnolia, had made a film a couple of years ago that really pissed me off so much I sent him some hate mail for it…that film was Alien vs. Predator. Two years later, I run across another movie of his at the video store that I have never heard of or just never bothered picking up during its release but starred Laurence Fishburne and Sam Neill as astronauts so I thought I’d give it a try, expecting some intergalactic warfare with aliens and what not but I was not prepared for what was to come as my expectations were completely wrong and found an underrated gem hiding in the dirt that shone upon me as I saw it on the shelf. The movie takes place in the year 2047, a rescue space crew has been called upon to the boundaries of Neptune to investigate a ship named Event Horizon that has been missing for 7 years when it first orbited and has now reappeared. Doing their jobs, the crew goes on to ship to find out where the hell the ship has been for the last 7 years and what happened with the last crew that was on the ship. Chaotic, nightmarish terror ensues as the crew finds out that this ship has gone beyond the outer limits of space to somewhere much deeper and darker and has a mind of its own and will not let the crew leave the ship alive. For someone expecting phasers, wise cracking soldiers saying cool intergalactic slang before blasting an alien away, I was pleasantly scared. This is like a haunted house ghost story set in space, people thinking they are hallucinating only to be creeped out by the fact that it’s an actual demon or evil spirit of some sort, very suspenseful combined with a mixture of blood and guts; a rarity for a science fiction film. Laurence Fishburne plays the captain of the crew and does so with his commanding presence, just point the camera at the man and you’re already hooked by his performance. Sam Neill post Jurassic Park is not the same doctor like the one he played in that little dinosaur movie I just mentioned, he’s gone freaking mad. Although it gets a bit clichéd near the end of the film as if the filmmakers didn’t know how to end it and it rips off heavily from other better science fiction and horror films such as Alien and The Shining for example, this is a terrifying and suspenseful sci-fi horror film worth checking out if you tire of the new release shelf at the video store.

This movie has everything and more. A space ship that looks like a cross and has its own mind; an gravity-drive that looks like a big spiky ball, and all kinds of hell break loose, literally. The spookiness and suspense builds up in a short amount of time and delivers maximum amount of scare. Event Horizon does try anything new or unique, but just the old-fashioned scary and weird-looking stuff. This is a horror classic that should not be missed.
