In a small town in Massachusetts, chaos occurs when young girls begin "crying out" names of the town people, accusing them of witchcraft. Caught in the middle is John Proctor, who has commited adultery with a girl named Abigail, who also "cries out" the name of Elizabeth, John's wife.
