Richard Gere plays John Klein, a Washington, D.C.reporter who he and his wife Debra Messing) are involved in a car accident. Shortly after her death, John discovers strange drawings that she had made of a winged creature.

Two years later, while driving to Richmond, Virginia, John becomes lost and ends up arriving in the small town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia with no memory of how he got there. He soon becomes entangled in a chain of mysterious events, whereby local townspeople report strange supernatural encounters, along with weird lights and phone calls. John investigate the encounters and finds out that a supernatural creature known as the Mothman, whose appearances seem to foretell disastrous events is the common link. Things take a frightening turn when he discovers the eerie connections between his wife's drawings, eyewitness accounts of the Mothman, and phone calls from an other-worldly group called the Indrid Cold.

If your looking for a good horror movie...this isn't it. If you want a lame horror movie that will definetly bore you to sleep...this is it! This film was 40 minutes of storyline crammed into 2 hours of movie. Considering the subject, it was a rather boring movie. It may have been difficult enough to believe THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES was a " true story " if it had remained set in the 60s but by placing it at the turn of the millenuim it`s impossible to take seriously. My main problem is that nothing is really wrapped up. I mean, I know it cannot be fully explained because no one knows what the Mothman is or who Indrid Cold was but maybe there was more explained or suggested in John A. Keel's book than the movie featured. Richard Gere is a pretty good actor when he is trying. Here he seems only half interested. This is not a great film by any means because there isn't enough happening and too much of what does happen makes little real-world sense. Yes there is a good climax, but that hardly makes up for this frustrating experience.
