Set in 1969, the film centres around two out of work actors, Withnail (Richard E Grant) and Marwood (Paul McGann), who are desperate to escape from the squalid surroundings of their Camden flat. Help appears to be at hand when Withnail's Uncle Monty (Richard Griffiths), offers the boys the use of his cottage in Cumbria. When they arrive however, things aren't quite as idyllic as they'd hoped and their somewhat limited basic survival skills are put to the test. The situation is further complicated by the arrival of Uncle Monty, who shows an uncomfortably keen interest in Marwood…
