Tony Last is an old-fashioned young landowner, with a big Victorian country house. But he is married to Brenda, who is bored by the country. She gets herself a flat in London and a boyfriend, Beaver, with whom she becomes obsessed. When Brenda decides she wants a divorce, Tony chivalrously offers to give her grounds to divorce him for adultery, but it all goes horribly wrong. Then Tony goes off to the Amazon with an explorer friend and fails to come home.
