This film won critical acclaim, taking home the Academy Awards for best actress (Katharine Hepburn), best adapted screenplay, and best original score, a Director’s Guild Award for director Anthony Harvey’s work, two Golden Globe Awards for best actor in a drama (Peter O’Toole) and for best dramatic film, as well as the New York Film Critic award for best film. During its 135 minutes, Henry II (Peter O’Toole) invites his imprisoned wife Eleanor of Aquitane (Katherine Hepburn), his sons Richard (Anthony Hopkins), Geoffrey (John Castle), and John (Nigel Terry), and Philip II of France (Timothy Dalton) to a Christmas gathering at Chignon in 1183. What follows is two hours of the most humorous witty repertoire between all characters and the enlightening portrayals of these characters. Though the film is not based on actual fact, it does have a historical basis and does provide the audience with an accurate depiction of the dynamics of such a dysfunctional family. Though Hollywood has been known for taking extreme poetic license when making historical films, not always adhering to the truth, it seems to show what the Middle Ages truly was like and what life was like under Henry II.
