One of the most terrifying ideas of all the schlocky 50s sc-fi/horror films, diabolical in its understated use of the fact "that all is not as it appears to be." Without a lot of special effects or use of aliens with a "master design", this movie capitalizes and expands on ideas of vampires and possession - but instead puts it all in a simplistic pod race that merely is performing some bizarre and inexorable biological function.

Adding to the building tension of more and more people being replaced by emotionless drones is the fact that the story is remarkably unjudgmental in its plot. The conclusion merely emphasizes that moral standards are ambiguous in the face of mindless destiny. The acting and production is hardly state-of-the-art, but the creepiness lives on.
