I've always wondered what kind of movies Fritz Lang would have made if he didn't flee Europe in the 1930s. His American films have style but seem much more personal. However, a lot of this led to the origin of "film noir", so I guess the trade-off was decent for movie fans.

"The Big Heat" is full of double crosses and crackling dialog, doesn't shrink when it comes to brutality and is worth paying attention to. The mob story has some big issues attached, but as usual with the genre, the story is told through individuals fighting for space in the world they have fallen into. One man alone is redeemed, but the path to his fate is littered with broken lives and bodies.
