Operation Market-Garden certainly had the makings for a great and epic film. Most of Montgomery's offensive campaigns were disasters that would make good film material, and this military blunder is no exception. But somewhere along the way, this movie gets lost and descends into a star cameo vehicle. In many scenes, the movie seems anything but epic...for example, the US airborne assault wave looks tiny compared to what really took place. I suppose that was a budget problem and they couldn't round up enough transports to make it look real. The story of the Polish forces is never really resolved in a meaningful way, which would make a great movie in itself. The script is weak in many scenes and full of cliches. Somehow, I get the feeling that the whole thing was under-budgeted and under-scheduled as well. It is an enjoyable movie, and worth seeing once just for the multitude of stars, but I consider it the most over-rated war movie of all time.
