Rose (Barbra Streisand) and Greogory (Jeff Bridges) are both successful professors at Columbia University, and both have been unlucky at love. Rose's sister steps in to help her find love by answering a personal ad that Gregory placed. Believing that physical intimacy has been the downfall of all of his prior relationships, Gregory vows to find a woman to marry that he has no sexual attraction to what-so-ever.
